Capacity: 25

LOCATION DESCRIPTION / In-person: Join Alabama Audubon in celebrating Birdability Week this year from October 21-27, 2024! This week-long event is dedicated to making birding accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of ability. Executive Director Dr. Scot Duncan and Program Coordinator Andrew Lydeard will lead a small, wheelchair accessible outing for another celebration of the week at Avondale Park in Birmingham. We will travel as a group around the lake in search of birds, stopping at King’s Spring to scan the woods and edges, before making a full loop around the pond. Those that want to complete a short journey up the hill with Scot are welcome to do so while Andrew completes the loop and enjoys the birds near the spring.

Avondale Park is one of the birdier and more accessible green spaces in the Birmingham area and features a small pond, a spring (King’s Spring), and a mix of forest and shrubby edges. Birding along the forest edge near the spring in fall is one of the best places to spot migrating warblers and other birds, and a great location to quickly build a long species list in the fall. We’ll search for late warblers like Tennessee and Magnolia Warblers while looking out for some of our returning winter residents like Blue-headed Vireos and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Don’t forget to scan the skies for raptors like Sharp-shinned Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawks, and even Peregrine Falcons!

LOCATION DETAILS / In-person: We will meet in the parking lot at Avondale Park promptly at 12:00pm. There is no admission and parking is free. Restrooms are usually available but occasionally lock for cleaning, so please plan accordingly.
