LOCATION DESCRIPTION / In-person: Join Alabama Audubon in celebrating Birdability Week this year from October 21-27, 2024! This week-long event is dedicated to making birding accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of ability. Senior Coastal Biologist Olivia Morpeth and Coastal Biologist Shannel Dock will host a Big Sit on Bayfront Park’s pier and lead a roostwatch at sunset at this quaint and accessible park in Daphne. The Mobile Bay is one of the richest ecosystems in the world, and many coastal birds seek shelter in the bottomlands and marshes tucked in away from the coast. Come watch sunset and celebrate Birdability Week with us at Bayfront Park!
Olivia will count terns, waders, and gulls as they return to roost in the Mobile Bay and help participants ID many of the species she actively protects and conserves on Alabama’s coast. Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons often trickle by in the dozens as they seek a nighttime roost while Caspian and Forster’s Terns feed until finding their own refuge. The park is a great location to see shorebirds like Willets and Least Sandpipers on the sandy spit across from the pier while the reedy marshes nearby hosts Limpkins, Common Gallinules, and overwintering Green Herons.
