HABITAT VOLUNTEER
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Volunteers have been the leading force behind Alabama Audubon since its founding. If you want to help us achieve our mission to promote conservation and a greater knowledge of birds, their habitats, and the natural world, then we invite you to find out more about our current opportunities.
HABITAT VOLUNTEER
Our Habitat Volunteer Corps plays an essential role in our efforts to restore Birmingham-area landscapes for the benefit of birds and the people who love them. Currently, these efforts are focused primarily on our Audubon-Datnow Forest Preserve at W.E. Putnam Middle School, located in the heart of the city’s Eastwood neighborhood. While working to assist the Science & Conservation Director, Dr. Lianne Koczur, with this project, you will find this is a great opportunity to get outside, learn more about native-plant restoration, and make a positive difference in the Alabama landscape.
POTENTIAL TASKS
Periodically removing invasive plants like Chinese privet, English ivy, and Nandina domestica
Monitoring habitat-restoration sites for biodiversity metrics and emerging challenges
Cleaning up litter and debris
Assisting as general support with various tasks during public workdays on site

The Habitat Volunteer must—
Be able to conduct manual-labor tasks like lifting, bending, digging, crouching, and pulling
Feel comfortable working outside under various conditions, including difficult weather (hot, cold, wet), and in the presence of inhospitable plant and insect life

TIME EXPECTATIONS
Community Science Volunteers will coordinate with the Science & Conservation Director to develop a participation schedule that is compatible with both the individual’s availability and the requirements of the project.
